The Role of Dry Needling in Treating Chronic Muscle Tightness

What is Dry Needling?

If you have ever felt a stubborn knot in your neck or shoulders that massage just can't seem to release, you are likely dealing with a myofascial trigger point. Dry needling is an evidence-based clinical technique used by physiotherapists to target these deep muscle knots.

How Does It Work?

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine and meridians, dry needling is rooted in modern Western medicine and neuroanatomy. We insert a thin, sterile monofilament needle directly into the active trigger point. This produces a localized contraction or "twitch response" in the muscle fibers, which triggers several physiological responses:

  • Muscle Reset: The twitch response breaks the cycle of sustained muscle contraction, letting the muscle fibers relax.
  • Increased Blood Flow: The needle insertion creates micro-trauma, drawing oxygen-rich blood to the area to speed up tissue healing.
  • Natural Pain Relief: It stimulates the nervous system to release endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

Is It Painful?

Most patients feel a dull ache or a brief cramping sensation when the needle hits the trigger point, followed by immediate relief and increased range of motion.
