5 Common Sports Injuries in Football & How to Prevent Them

Dr. Abin Thomas | Jul 02, 2026

Understanding Football Injuries

Football is a high-intensity, contact sport that places immense stress on the lower limbs. As the former Head Physiotherapist for Kerala Blasters FC, I have seen numerous players sidelined by preventable injuries. Understanding how these occur and taking proactive measures is crucial for long-term athletic performance.

1. ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Tears

The ACL is critical for knee stability, especially during rapid changes of direction, pivoting, or sudden deceleration. A tear often occurs without contact and requires structured rehabilitation or surgical reconstruction followed by 9 months of intense physio.

2. Hamstring Strains

Hamstring pulls are the most common muscle injuries in football, typically occurring during high-speed sprinting. Weakness, poor running mechanics, and inadequate warm-up are the leading causes.

3. Ankle Sprains

Inversion sprains happen when a player steps on an uneven surface or lands awkwardly on an opponent's foot, stretching or tearing the lateral ankle ligaments.

Prevention Strategies

  • FIFA 11+ Warm-Up: Incorporate this structured warm-up program focusing on core strength, balance, plyometrics, and dynamic stretching.
  • Strength & Conditioning: Build eccentric hamstring strength using exercises like Nordic Hamstring Curls.
  • Proprioception Training: Use wobble boards and single-leg balance drills to build neuromuscular control.
